Piggy backing off of Jonny Bowden’s article from yesterday (if you haven’t seen it, check it out HERE), I want to bring you all up to speed with what’s going on here in America in regards to our food.
I see it every day. I walk into Wawa for my morning coffee and at least 80% (being generous) of the people in there are overweight or obese. Then, I continue through my work day taking tabs on the every day Joe’s and Jane’s, who I will never know, and see the exact same thing. Overweight or obese people all around me and it’s sad. Now, part of it is their own fault, let’s be honest. The major part, though, are greedy big business owners looking to get as much product off the shelf as possible. As American’s, most of us are slaves to mind numbing work weeks with bills to pay and mouths to feed. Because of the rat race we’ve succumbed to, I think a lot of us don’t take the time to look at the cycle we’re stuck in. So, let’s dive in….
To my point about big business not giving a shit about you. It’s true. Plain and simple. Next time you go to your grocery store, take a look at all the isle’s and what foods/drinks/science projects are on the shelves. Take a look at the ingredients. Is it all from the Earth? And by from the Earth, I mean could you grow it, kill it, gather it, or raise it? If any of those ingredients look like they don’t fit any of those 4, it’s probably closer to a science project and you shouldn’t be eating it. Now, let’s go to the outer rim of the store…
Fruits, vegetables, red meat, chicken/poultry, fish, and dairy are the main makeup of the outer rim, with some other things thrown in there. This is the “good area” to shop. I use quotations because even though that’s the best option under the roof of corporate grocery stores, you still have to be careful with what you buy from that outer rim. Fruits and vegetables are full of pesticides and herbicides at Corporate Super Markets. Red meat should be from grass fed cattle, not some poor Bessy that’s been shot up with more hormones than Barry Bonds. Same goes for chicken. Fish should be wild, not farm raised. You’re dairy products? Unless it specifically says “no rBGH,” it’s full of hormones that they use to force the cows to produce more milk than they should be producing. Some Bessy’s have to produce 300 days of the year to meet quota at the Farm!!! When it’s all said and done, the Supercenter Grocery Stores are just a marketing tool for Big Food (Big Food = Big Business).
Now, some may say that the alternative (Fresh Market, Trader Joe’s, Wegman’s) is too expensive. Bullshit. I shop at Fresh Market and I’m not even close to wealthy/living comfortably. It’s by FAR my favorite market to purchase groceries. EVERYTHING is fresh, the meat/fish/poultry section is full of great, clean choices, and the best part…it’s really not that much more expensive than going to your local super chain. The only difference is the price of meat/fish/poultry, but well worth the expense. I challenge all of you to try one of these stores (GO TO FRESH MARKET!!!) and give it a shot. You don’t have to worry about the contents of your food nearly as much as you would in a regular market.
The bottom line…
Big business doesn’t care whether you live or die, the suits just want your money. It’s up to us in the training/nutrition/medical fields to bring you better information in order for you to make better choices. What will you choose?
